Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, has been declared the winner of the tightly-contested Kawempe North MP by-election.
According to the Electoral Commission, the city lawyer garnered 17,764 votes while his closest contender, Ms. Faridah Nambi of the ruling National Resistance Movement, got 8,593.
The seat fell vacant following the death of then-MP Muhammad Ssegirinya in January this year.
”Having added up the votes cast as recorded on each declaration form following section 72 of the Parliamentary Elections Act Cap 177, I declare Nalukoola has who has obtained the highest number of votes to be the elected candidate for Kawempe North constituency,” the returning officer for Kampala district, Henry Makabayi declared.
The declaration of Nalukoola was the climax of an election marred by violence, especially against journalists, most of whom were badly beaten and others kidnapped by security agencies.
Journalists have since announced a boycott of all activities of UPDF and Police until further notice.
