President Museveni reveals Gen. Elly Tumwine succumbed to lung cancer

Following the death of one of the top army generals in the country, Gen. Elly Tumwine, President Museveni has said the former Security Minister and NRA hero died of lung cancer.

Gen. Elly Tumwine was announced dead early today morning after he lost a battle to sickness at Ag Khan Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya where he was airlifted a few days ago.

President Museveni confirmed his passing through a statement he shared across social media.

“With deep sorrow, I announce the deep death, at 5:46 am in Nairobi, of General Elly Tumwiine from lung cancer,” Museveni said in a statement released on Thursday morning.

“I had taught him at Burunga Primary School in 1967, after our A-levels, as a student teacher, before going to University, later that year. He joined FRONASA with 9000 others in 1979, went to Monduli Military School in Tanzania, and was the one who fired the first shot on  February 6, 1981, at Kabamba, at the beginning of the 1981-1986 war of resistance,” Museveni added.

The president said since then, Gen Tumwine has been part of the leadership of the NRA- UPDF as well as part of the government in various capacities where he served diligently.

Those capacities included being an army commander, member of the High Command, Director-General of IntelligenceMinister of Security, etc.

He has been a dedicated and hardworking cadre. More will be said about him later.
