Uganda’s music industry is mourning the loss of one of its most passionate and resilient voices.
Renowned musician Daudi Mugema has today, June 24th, 2025, been pronounced dead after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Mugema, widely known for blending activism with art, had spent the past several years grappling with serious health complications.
In multiple interviews, he courageously opened up about how his health began to deteriorate following his arrest and detention at Kireka Police Station, where he developed severe foot complications that later escalated into a cancer diagnosis.
Upon seeking medical care at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Mugema was informed that cancer had affected one of his legs.
This marked the beginning of a painful chapter for the singer, who subsequently underwent chemotherapy.
As a result of the treatment, he began to wear a cape—an iconic symbol during his final years—to cover the hair loss caused by chemotherapy’s harsh side effects.
Despite the illness, Mugema’s spirit never dimmed. In a touching show of support, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago stepped in to help the ailing musician travel to Turkey for specialized treatment.
Upon his return to Uganda, Mugema expressed optimism about his condition, stating in an interview that he was hopeful and feeling better.
However, in a cruel twist of fate, his illness returned. As the cancer worsened, Mugema made public appeals for financial assistance to cover escalating medical expenses.
His final known journey took him to Gulu, where he sought help from Gen. Salim Saleh, the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC).
Tragically, it was in Gulu that his battle came to an end.
The news of Mugema’s death has sent shockwaves across Uganda. Fans, fellow artists, and public figures have taken to social media to express their condolences, praise his musical legacy, and commend his resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship.
Mugema leaves behind not just a legacy of music but a powerful story of endurance, activism, and unwavering faith in the face of adversity. May his soul rest in peace.
