Bobi Wine, born Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has spoken up about Pearl FM’s suspension by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
Last week, the radio station was suspended from airing on reports suggesting that one of its presenters aired out information regarding rigging of votes in the Kawempe North by-election.
Bobi’s opinion, states that the closure of Pearl FM is an extension of the attack on the media where some reporters were flogged, abducted, and clobbered whereas other properties including cameras were vandalized.

He condemns the act of UCC shutting down the radio’s operations in this month of Ramadan since it is a Muslim entity and asked that it should be reopened as soon as possible.
“The criminal regime switched Pearl FM off air, for apparently talking about the rigging of elections in Kawempe North. This is so, despite the abundant evidence of the kind of rigging the regime engineered, including at the house discovered by our leaders the day before the elections. This closure was an extension of the attack on the media where journalists were clobbered and their equipment destroyed. Pearl FM is an instrumental Radio Station, listened to by very many Ugandans, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters. During the Holy Month of Ramadan, Pearl FM devotes a significant portion of its airplay to Islamic teachings and prayers. It is most unfortunate that Gen. Museveni has used UCC to block this station during this holy month. We strongly condemn the attack on the media and demand that the radio station be reopened”, Bobi Wine.
The Kawempe North by-election was won by National Unity Platforms (NUP) Hon. Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola by a landslide margin beating NRM’s Faridah Nambi Kigongo, FDC’s Kalifah AgaNaga and other contestants.
