Authorities in Kampala have arrested a taxi driver involved in a viral stunt that has sparked outrage across social media.
The widely shared video shows a man, believed to be a content creator, dangerously riding on the roof of a moving vehicle, an act that has prompted public concern and a swift response from police.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the vehicle was successfully traced and impounded.
The driver, who reportedly accepted payment for the stunt, has been charged with carrying a passenger in a dangerous position—a serious violation under Uganda’s road safety laws.
“We managed to trace the vehicle carrying someone on top of its bed. It was impounded, and the driver was charged… However, the passenger has not yet been traced, but efforts to locate him are ongoing,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan.
Reports suggest the unidentified TikToker paid the driver 20,000 Ugandan shillings to carry out the stunt, which has since been condemned by road safety advocates and the general public. Critics argue such reckless behavior, often done for views and social media engagement, sets a dangerous precedent for others—especially young, impressionable followers.
“This is very dangerous, lads,” Owoyesigyire added, underscoring the potential harm involved.
The video has circulated widely across TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), where it has sparked a mix of outrage and shock.
Police have launched an investigation to track down the passenger involved, who could face charges once identified.
Authorities are reminding the public—and particularly online content creators—that putting lives at risk for viral fame is not only irresponsible but also a criminal offense.
